In 1983, York Archaeological Trust undertook excavations on Lendal, York, in advance of an extension to the Judge’s Lodgings Hotel. On the site of what was believed to be the former graveyard of St Wilfrid’s Church, a highly unusual object was uncovered – a complete and sealed 17th-century “witch bottle”. The reports below provide an insight into the contents and context of this magical object in post-medieval York.
